Mr. ‘Aminiasi Kefu graduated with an LLB from the University of Waikato in New Zealand in 1997, after which he was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. Following a brief secondment to the Crown Solicitor’s Office, Auckland (Meredith Connell & Co), Mr. Kefu returned to Tonga and was admitted to the Supreme Court of Tonga in 1998. Mr. Kefu was appointed Assistant Crown Counsel in 1997, before being promoted to Crown Counsel in 2000 and Senior Crown Counsel in 2001.
Mr. Kefu is youngest person to be appointed to the post of Solicitor General. He held the position of Solicitor General from 2008 to April 2014. He was then appointed to his current position as Tonga’s first Director of Public Prosecutions in April 2014. He is a member of the Pacific Islands Law Officers’ Network (PILON); Pacific International Maritime Law Association (PIMLA) and the Pacific Prosecutors Association.
As the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Kefu is responsible for all criminal litigation and he also represents the Crown in all litigation matters including civil and land matters.
