Tonga Treaty Collection

Treaties set forth the rules upon which Tonga, as a State, interacts and relates with countries and international organizations on any topic. It gives the recognition that Tonga, is a State and has the full capacity as a country and Government to participate in the Global arena.

Tonga Treaty Collection 2023 lists treaties and other international agreements the Kingdom of Tonga has entered since the 1800’s. The list sets out all treaties and other international agreements of the Kingdom of Tonga on record until 27 April 2023. Certain types of agreements are not listed, such as classified agreements.

The Crown Law Department sponsors scholarship for under-graduate and post-graduate studies in law, subject to availability of sponsored scholarships offered from the Government's Scholarship Committee.

Such scholarships are awarded under the normal scholarship award process administered by the Government Scholarship Committee.

Crown Law regularly requests the Government Scholarship Committee to provide on average an under-graduate and post-graduate scholarship every year, but such requests will be subject to availability of scholarships, and the need for awarding new law scholarship.

Awardees of Crown Law sponsored law scholarships from the Government Scholarship Committee not only secure free sponsorship of study, but also employment in Crown Law upon successful completion of studies.

Law scholarships offered to Crown Law may be sponsored by the governments of New Zealand, Australia, the Commonwealth or other sources of assistance.

In 2009 Crown Law started offering Law Clerk positions on a daily-paid labour basis in accordance with the Tongan Public Service's policies.

The objectives of the programme are to:

1. Prepare Tongan Government sponsored law scholars for service in Crown Law and in Government;
2. Inspire and encourage Tongan Government law scholars, through their temporary time in Crown Law, to successfully complete their studies and return and work for the Tongan Government;
3. Utilise law scholars to conduct basic administrative and legal work for Crown Law, particularly assisting in filing and archiving of closed files, organising legal resources, conducting legal research, assist in translation work and other legal and administrative work; and
4. Provide temporary employment for law scholars as a source of income that could assist for obtaining resources for their studies.

Places will be offered during November to February period, and will be based on funding and workload.
